Homemade Hump Day: Hot Cocoa

5 Jun

I’ve recently developed an obsession with making attempting to make things from scratch. And I don’t mean this semi-homemade business. I mean for real in real life, nothing from a can (obvi, I’m not making my own flour or anything like that…yet…but you know what I mean). Sometimes it’s fantastical and I decide I’ll never go back to the store-bought version. Other times, it’s an EPIC fail…After one such epic fail, my daughter, Big A, wanted some hot chocolate. So I decided I was going to redeem myself and make it from scratch!

DSC_0775It seemed like this would be a relatively simple way to make myself feel like I hadn’t lost all my abilities to cook. Luckily, we had some unsweetened Hershey’s cocoa powder that I accidentally bought a few months ago but was too lazy to return. Also, as luck would have it, there was a recipe on the box. So I have the ingredients and I don’t even have to search Google or Pintrest for recipe! Could it be!?! It’s like it was meant to be (or like Hershey’s knows people might need a recipe to know what to do with unsweetened cocoa powder).

Well, Hershey’s, it was divine. And it was super easy. I didn’t really expect it to be difficult but my ego was bruised at the time so I felt good that it turned out well.

Watch out, Swiss Miss! I can do more than boil water or microwave some milk!

Hershey’s Favorite Hot Cocoa

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup HERSHEY’S Cocoa

Dash salt

1/3 cup hot water

4 cups (1 qt.) milk

3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Miniature marshmallows or sweetened whipped cream (optional)

Stir together sugar, cocoa and salt in medium saucepan; stir in water.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Boil and stir 2 minutes.

Add milk; stirring constantly, heat to serving temperature. Do Not Boil.

Remove from heat; add vanilla.

Serve topped with marshmallows or whipped cream, if desired. Five 8-oz. servings.
